Happy Birthday BGC: Community Backs 98 Kids
Summer 2012
Birthdays are exciting occasions for kids–and for Clubs!
The Boys & Girls Club celebrated its 10th birthday this summer with a series of events that kicked off with a barbeque at Gary & Leo′s IGA.
On June 30, Club kids and community members gathered on the north side of the parking lot to eat BBQ beef sandwiches, cake and ice cream, play party games with Club staff, and enjoy music by the Other Brothers and Sisters.
Through the month of June, customers at IGA also had the option of Giving $10 to the Club at the register, and IGA donated $1 to the Club for each milk coupon they used.
The Give10 campaign continued through the summer and ended with the Club′s first–ever radio–a–thon on New Media Broadcasters stations.
Community members were challenged to cover the costs of 80 kids for the coming school year–and soared right over it, covering the costs of 98 Club members.
Thanks to a generous matching donation from the Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation, a gift of $10 a month was enough to cover the costs of one Club member for the year.
″I think it′s a wonderful program,″ said Carol Walker, who pledged $10 a month during the radio–a–thon. ″We should have had [the Club] years ago, when my girls were growing up. It′s a good thing, and everyone does such a good job.″
