Power Hour Helps Kids Learn

Fall 2013

When ″Corey″ began attending the Club this past summer, he was not even reading at a kindergarten level. He showed no interest in learning and rarely visited Power Hour. But as the summer went on, Corey noticed that other Club members were eating ice cream, which they had earned by reading 300 pages in Power Hour.

Corey wanted ice cream too. So he started reading through books in the Kindergarten bin. It was slow going at first, but he did made his page count and earned ice cream. He proceeded to read all of the books in the kindergarten bin!
Now Corey visits Power Hour regularly on his own, and his dad stopped by to say he is reading at home now too. ″Being back in school helps too,″ said Priscilla Presnell, who staffs the Power Hour room. ″But he made the most significant progress over the summer when he was Reading for Ice Cream.″

Corey isn′t the only student benefitting from time spent in Power Hour. According to grade data provided by Havre Public Schools, Club members who attend Power Hour perform better on standardized tests. Those who attend regularly show dramatic improvement in their math and reading scores. None of this would be possible without the support of GREAT donors like you! Thank you for giving kids the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
