STEM Center Opening
Fall 2013
What does cake have to do with science? More than you might think. The Club had a ″soft opening″ of its new STEM Center this summer (STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Club members were able to conduct a wide variety of experiments, including a chemistry project using cake recipes.
″We mixed the ingredient together according to the directions, but we would change one of them to be more or less, and see what happens,″ said Chris Reed, who ran the STEM Center over the summer. ″We had some very interesting cakes,″ Chris said. ″They learned that baking soda is really important!″ Club members also did density experiments with a variety of household liquids—turns out oil and water don′t mix.
